OVERVIEW: If you're keen to do more walking in the countryside or on the mountains, but you find yourself held back by a lack of confidence in finding your way around new areas or in bad weather, our Lake District Navigation Skills Course will help get you on track and show you how to stride confidently through valleys, forests hills and fells in all weathers, knowing you're following the right route, even off the beaten track. Instruction from experts is provided alongside some delightful walking, and the usual high standards of accommodation and attention to detail.

  • Enjoy some fantastic Lakeland walks and build your confidence in navigation

  • Refresher about map scales and types, and how to read and provide grid references
  • Learn the key symbols and map features
  • The rights of way system and your access rights
  • Discover how to read contours effectively
  • Learn how to measure distances, and how to time or pace your route
  • How to plan your route
  • Find out how to take and follow a compass bearing
  • What to do if you get lost! 
  • Introduction to GPS and computer based mapping systems
  • How to navigate in poor visibility or even in the dark
  • General 'hill skills' instruction and advice

Lake District Navigation Course Prices Include:

- Transfers from Penrith station if travelling by public transport
- Transport to course start point each day as required

Private guiding is available for individuals and small groups and we can set up courses for walking groups midweek or weekend.
